Dance Connected – Establishing Capacity for Strengthening and Diversifying the Bulgarian Contemporary Dance Scene

DANCE CONNECTED (DC) is an attempt to revitalise and enrich the cultural market in Bulgaria in the in the field of contemporary performing arts. The project is deployed in five key activities, aimed at both professionals and the general public. DC covers various aspects of contemporary dance (from trainings and performances to perceptions and talks), taking place in the form of workshops for exchange of experiences and innovative techniques (dance and stage design; for professionals and students / young talents), complete original performances and international forum composed of lectures and discussions. The project is implemented in partnership with three of the largest and most progressive Swiss dance companies - Cie Gilles Jobin, Cie Philipe Saire and Cie József Trefeli, all of which are globally recognised because of their contribution to the development of modern dance. Other big names and partners in DC are Krassen Krastev, Madeleine Raykov and Nicole Seiler who participate as mentors and choreographers.

Project overall objective (impact) is to strengthen and diversify the Bulgarian contemporary dance scene so that it produces competitive and valuable products both locally and internationally and thus become a beneficial and driving factor for the Bulgarian cultural economy.

Project specific objectives (outcomes):

  • To encourage the production of local contemporary dance performances by fostering exchange of professional know-how and expertise, and addressing policy making and funding opportunities;
  • To promote the art of contemporary dance as enjoyable and preferable artistic or entertainment factor by presenting it to the general public as interesting, accessible, understandable, multifaceted and a lucrative and attractive career choice.

DANCE CONNECTED interim results are as follows:

  • 9 workshops conducted (in cooperation with project partners), incl. sound and light workshop, aimed at professionals, choreographers and students/ young talents;
  • One-day forum for the general public held. The event consisted of lectures-presentations, screenings and discussions. The forum served as a dynamic platform for the exchange of best practices and artistic inspirations, a platform to share experiences and ideas about the development of contemporary dance.
  • 8 performances staged by the Swiss and Swiss-Bulgarian  partners: Cie Gilles Jobin (Quantum, 2014), Cie Philipe Saire (4 performances of BLACK OUT, 2015), Krassen Krastev (The Jungle! Plovdiv is Burning, 2014).
  • More than 600 people (audience) reached in performances and forum.
  • Over 100 workshop participants trained in new dance techniques and practices from the international contemporary dance scene.

Project evaluation will take place at the end of 2016, after its official close.
